In the legal hiring market, few employers other than BigLaw firms pay for recruiting services. As a result, it can be difficult to find a recruiter who will assist you on a search for the vast majority of legal openings. But as an experienced former career advisor at Harvard Law School and Boston University School of Law, I have the experience and the know-how to provide detailed advice for attorneys looking beyond the BigLaw firm.
Therefore, I offer a job search consulting service for lawyers where I act as their personal advisor in the job search. In this capacity, I can provide specific and actionable advice about how to find employment in the following practice settings:
In-house corporate lawyer
Public interest or government lawyer
Solo attorney
Law firm attorney
Non-legal positions for lawyers
This service covers the following types of assistance:
Goal setting and planning, including self-assessment exercises. Initial meetings will cover your short-term and long-term career goals for your job search, as well as practical considerations like geographic limitations, salary requirements and work culture.
Preparation of a highly-tailored job search plan. This consists of a dynamic spreadsheet of both actual and possible job opportunities in the geographic range of your choice, in line with your career goals. The search plan, created and shared in Google Sheets, will include job position suggestions, search resources, and potential contacts to identify “hidden opportunities” (see template here). I will use public resources, as well as subscription resources like Firm Prospects and LinkedIn Sales Navigator to create this tailored plan for you. This will be updated by me with suggestions throughout the course of our engagement, but it is expected that you will update it as well as you progress in your search.
Detailed review and mark-up of your resume and form cover letter. You will provide a rough draft of a resume and cover letter that can be used in your job search as Word files. (I can provide a cover letter template as a start, if you do not have one.) I will provide a detailed mark-up of both in track changes. This will result in strong “base materials” that can be used for your job applications.
Ongoing career advising by phone or videochat/Zoom. Advising time can be used however you find most useful – to set actionable tasks and goals, to prepare for an interview, to tailor materials for a specific job, to discuss a contact meeting or informational interview or anything else relevant to your job search or career interests.
Availability for quick questions by email or text. I recognize that urgent or quick questions may come up and require discussion before our next scheduled meeting. You may ask quick questions by email or text and I will do my best to respond as quickly as possible.
NOTE: Presently, Jason is open only to corporate or firmwide engagements for this service.
